Bobbie Merica — Founder of Modern Medical Moulage Training

Bobbie Merica is the creator and sensory architect of immersive medical moulage and the standards that define its practice worldwide.

Over more than 20 years, she has established the foundation for how immersive injury simulation is designed, taught, and operationalized across across healthcare, emergency response, military, and disaster preparedness systems, including hospital-based simulation, EMS field training, and mass-casualty response exercises.

This work has influenced the development of medical and trauma moulage training and simulation solutions across global training environments. From its earliest application, her work has elevated moulage into a structured discipline within simulation-based training, directly shaping how realism is integrated to improve decision-making, performance, and readiness in real-world events.

Industry Origin Story

How Medical Moulage Training Became a Standard in Simulation

Through her leadership as a Simulation Coordinator, SimCenter consultant, and simulation systems designer, she has helped shape training environments that align instructional design, learner engagement, and operational outcomes. This systems-level approach has supported the standardization of realism within high-fidelity simulation programs across healthcare, emergency response, military, and disaster preparedness sectors.

Drawing from real forensic cases and clinical experience, she developed a structured approach to creating realistic injuries that went beyond makeup and visual props, establishing a more intentional, outcomes-driven methodology for simulation design.

Her work elevated moulage into a fully professional training tool, now integrated across hospital trauma simulation programs, pre‑hospital EMS training environments, military medical readiness exercises, and disaster‑response education systems. These implementations span trauma bay simulations, EMS field‑response training, battlefield casualty‑care exercises, and large‑scale mass‑casualty drills.

Focused on realism, performance, and learning outcomes, her work continues to define and advance immersive training through continuous innovation, applied realism, and the ongoing evolution of simulation-based education.

Her work has been recognized and adopted across multiple disciplines within simulation and emergency training.
