Coffee Ground Emesis
1Tbsp. used coffee grounds
2 Tbsp water
½ drop caramel coloring
½ drop red food coloring
Smell: Swirl rusty nail through coffee ground mixture to create slight “bloody, metallic” smell.
Combine used coffee grounds and water in emesis basin. Stir approx. 1 minute or until water becomes tainted with coffee ground mixture. Add additional water as necessary to create “slushie” consistency. Stir in caramel and red food coloring.
Environmental Settings:
Apply “soft” barrier around mouth, lips and chin of simulator, to create a moulage surface. Using Q-tip or small paint brush, gently apply small amounts of coffee ground emesis granules to outside lips and chin of simulator. (Do not put inside mouth of Simulator). Add small amount of coffee ground vomit to towel/wash cloth and front of patient gown (remove towel/gown from simulator, allow to fully dry before replacing) in addition to emesis basin. Use in conjunction with black tarry stool. See: black tarry stool recipe.
Clean Up:
Using soft rag; wipe emesis and soft barrier from lips and chin. Treated towel/Gown and emesis basin (contents dried) can be stored together in Moulage box or bag for future use. Mixture can be reused approx. 20 times.
Time Saving Hint:
Mixture can be made ahead, dried and stored, covered, in the emesis basin. Keeping rusty nail in the emesis basin, allow contents to dry fully at room air. Cover and store. To reconstitute, add 1tbsp. of tap water to emesis basin with nail. Stir and allow mixture to rest for at least 10 minutes. Stir several times. Remove nail before proceeding to simulation.
